virginity question

Posted by C. on June 19, 2008 at 20:37:18:

On the show and the message boards I have heard that penis-in-
vagina intercourse is the only way someone is no longer considered a
virgin. Would a lesbian who's had a lot of experience with many
women partners still be considered a virgin? I would not consider
myself one if that were the case. Even though the traditional definition
of virginity is having had penis-in-vagina intercourse, don't you think
that definition could use some expanding, since it seems
heteronormative?

I agree with you, and having been on the phone lines when this
question was answered on the show, I can tell you that a whole lot of
people out there agree with you! The 'technical' definition of virginity
annoys (read, 'enrages') a fair portion of Sue's audience.

Beyond the heterospecific (is that a word?) nature of this definition,
what I and many people object to is that some (mainly young) people
are being talked into behaviour that is sexual, and told that it's okay
because it doesn't disrupt their status as an 'official' virgin. There is so
much behind the pressure to remain a virgin: societal issues, religion,
tradition, culture. Redefining the notion of virginity could open up
some very interesting discussions around sexuality.

How would you define virginity? Any thoughts from others on this
board?

Thanks for an interesting question!
Patsy.
